About 1,000 senior citizens from 17 communities in Jiading town of Shanghai's Jiading district gathered at the Huguojiao Temple on Oct 6 to celebrate Chongyang Festival, or Double Ninth Festival, which fell on Oct 7 this year.
A blessing ceremony was held for the elderly, wishing all parents and the elderly peace, happiness and good health.
A series of events was also staged to celebrate the traditional festival, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth Chinese lunar month. It is a day to pay respect to seniors in China.
After the performances, elderly people enjoyed food especially prepared for the Chongyang Festival. These included noodles symbolizing longevity and Chongyang cakes, which are usually made of glutinous rice flour, millet flour or bean flour.
"These kinds of events have been held continuously in Huguojiao Temple for several years. I had a good time and really enjoyed the food and the performance," said one senior citizen.
