An exhibition of ceramic works themed on the rat, the zodiac sign regarded as the symbol of 2020, is on display at the Xiang Art Center in Jiading until Feb 17.

Created by artists and college students, the ceramics are diverse in their designs and connotations, such as a red rat in a New Year greeting posture and another rat designed as the god of wealth wearing a golden skin.

"These works use a variety of glaze firing techniques and new materials, which blend traditional handicrafts with innovative design ideas," said Li Zimu, curator of the art center.

Tuantuan Yuanyuan, which in Chinese means "reunion", is a ceramic in the shape of a little mouse sleeping in a cradle and curled into a semicircle. "Circle" in Chinese culture means "reunion". The work was fired three times to bring out the gradient colors of silver, gold and purple.

Nightwatchman is an innovative work handmade by Jiang Zejing, a student at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. The armored mouse, which wears mighty clothes and has piercing eyes, is on a night patrol, guarding the safety and peace of local residents.

"The nightatchman is a character in Chinese myths. I've blended it with the nocturnal animal of the rat and created a figure to protect people during the New Year," Jiang said.

The exhibition is open on workdays from 9am to 5pm at Tower 5, District A, Nanxiang Zhidi, 1188 Huyi Highway.
