The consumer market in Jiading district, Shanghai saw a strong recovery during the eight-day holiday that ended on Oct 8, local media reported.
According to statistics, the district's 21 key commercial and trade enterprises generated 3.55 billion yuan ($526 million) in total sales from Sept 24 to Oct 8, a year-on-year increase of 6 percent.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer behavior and shopping patterns have changed, forcing Jiading to adapt in response to new demands. Online shopping played a leading role in boosting consumption in Jiading during the eight-day National Day holiday from Oct 1 to 8.
In an effort to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jiading has taken a number of measures, such as opening the Shanghai Nanxiang Incity Mega, which is Shanghai's largest single-building shopping mall. Statistics show that Shanghai Nanxiang Incity Mega generated 230 million yuan in total sales during the holiday.
Sales of gold jewelry in particular saw a strong surge as a result of promotional events held throughout the district.
