Shanghai International Auto City in Jiading has developed into a thriving hub for the automobile industry, and is playing a leading role in promoting Jiading as a world-class automotive industry center, local media reported Oct 9.
Jiading has been a powerhouse of Shanghai's auto industry, with one highlight being the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture which was established in 1984, and since then, Jiading has promoted large-scale production of automobiles, making the district the largest automotive industry base in China.
"The auto city is on its way to transforming from a traditional industrial base to a modern new city," said Li Lin, deputy chief engineer of Shanghai International Auto City.
Jiading cooperated with SAIC Motor, Huawei and China Mobile in 2019 to build the world's first 5G-based smart transport demonstration project, which will speed up the application and promotion of 5G internet of vehicles.
The second phase was launched this September, and the four parts have vowed to deepen cooperation and build a smart road with full 5G signal coverage in Jiading, in an effort to make the district a world-leader in the application of 5G smart cars.
Jiading has always led the country in the development of the automobile industry. In June 2016, the country's first national internet-connected vehicle (Shanghai) pilot demonstration zone was opened, and has offered test services for more than 90 automobile enterprises.
Currently, Jiading has opened 53.6 kilometers of test roads for intelligent connected vehicles, covering 65 square kilometers with full 5G signal coverage. The test road is also equipped with an advanced smart transport system, including a high-definition map, a vehicle-to-everything system, and a holographic road sensing system.
