Located on Qinghe Road in Jiading district, the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the earliest institute in China specializing in laser science and technology.
Established in May 1964, SIOM specializes in key fields like high-power laser technology, strong-field physics, high-intensity optics, information optics, quantum optics, and optical materials.
By the end of 2020, SIOM has applied for 4,598 patents, of which 2,870 were authorized. The institute has also received 49 national-level awards and 131 awards from CAS for its scientific and technological achievements. It was also rated as a base of international cooperation by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2007.
Through over 50 years of development, the institute has over 1,000 employees and over 900 professionals. Nine experts have been selected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In recent years, SIOM has actively promoted regional cooperation, as well as the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, which has contributed to the new pattern of sci-tech innovation and achievement transformation in the Yangtze River Delta region.
