News services in the Pudong New District of the city of Shanghai have announced that the Shanghai Museum, on People's Square in the Huangpu district, will be opening a branch in Pudong, based on a decision made back in June that is to design a world-class museum of ancient Chinese art with modern facilities.

The Shanghai Museum has a collection of 140,000 pieces of early art, featuring bronzes and ceramics, with a 39,200-square-meter space with 11 galleries and three special temporary exhibition halls. But, its galleries and exhibition halls are insufficient to display all the items in its collection, hence the idea of the Pudong expansion.

That museum will cover a 100,000-sq-m space, with displays of calligraphy, paintings and ancient handicrafts, with the idea of introducing ancient Chinese art to the world and helping promote Shanghai's cultural development.
