The Youth Creative Camp, co-organized by the Shanghai Charity Foundation, Shanghai Sheshan Youth Camp and Women's Federation of Chongming County, took place during the Sheshan Youth Camp on January 16 and 17.
Over 100 young campers from poor families in Chongming county, Shanghai, attended the camp.
Chongming county is the only county under the jurisdiction of Shanghai. The county consists of three main islands: Chongming Island, Changxing Island and Hengsha Island.
Xu Peili, trustee of the Shanghai Charity Foundation; Yu Weixing, director of the comprehensive management department of the Shanghai Women's Federation; and Song Zhang, vice-president of the Women's Federation of Chongming county, attended the opening ceremony.
Young campers spent their time in a creative way during the two-day camp. They painted t-shirts; made delicious bamboo rice, borsch and wontons; sang and danced in a bonfire party; and climbed a mountain on their own. The activities enriched their winter holiday experience and sharpened their skills.
The Sheshan Youth Camp was established in July 1983. It was China's first after-school education institution in the field. The camp aims to benefit the public and cultivate teenagers to grow healthily and happily. It is gradually developing into a high-quality public service platform for teenagers.
It won the excellent team prize during the China Youth Social Education Ginkgo Award in 2005 granted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee; the Civilization Office of the Central Communist Party Committee; the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League; the Ministry of Education; the Ministry of Culture; the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television; the State General Administration of Sports; the All-China Women's Federation; and the China Association for Science and Technology. It was also recognized as a safe organization in Shanghai in 2007 and an advanced organization for greening in Shanghai in 2008.
