BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- And what better way to mark the start of a new year than by witnessing the first sunrise of 2014? Our reporter Hu Chao was at the Great Wall's most famous pass, in north China’s Shanxi Province, to do just that and brings us these images.

Yanmenguan dates back some 3,000 years. Surrounded by high and steep mountains, it was once the most vital military fortification on the border for various dynasties and a place where the Central Plain culture and the northern nomads met, and often clashed in ancient times. More than 140 wars took place here between the 4th century A.D. and the 20th century. The current Yanmenguan was rebuilt in the Ming dynasty.

As you can see, the sky over the mountains in the distance has started to brighten, which means the sun is going to rise. The coldness and darkness will soon be dispelled. And here comes the sun.

Sunrise always gives one hope. Here in this ancient Great Wall pass, it seems to shine through thousands of years of history. Your imagination can take you back to ancient times, imagining all those wars and heroes who died here. The sunrise may have given hope to troops and generals who were once stationed and fought here, giving them faith and strength to protect their country and their families. And the 150 meters long Great Wall at the Yanmenguan is another symbol of the Chinese spirit.

The local government began to renovate the ancient relics in this area in 2009. The Yanmenguan is now a famous tourist attraction. Thousands of years of history have been revived. Wishing you a Happy New Year.
