The ancient city of Pingyao in Northern China's Shanxi province was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997, and in that year's UNESCO report committee members described Pingyao county as below:
"It retains all the Han city features, provides a complete picture of the cultural, social, economic and religious development in Chinese history, and it is of great value for studying the social form, economic structure, military defense, religious belief, traditional thinking, traditional ethics and dwelling form."
The well-preserved city walls are documents of Pingyao's history over hundreds of years.
