A 3D zebra crossing made its debut on a road in Jincheng, North China's Shanxi province, on Aug 18.
With the white background highlighted by blue and yellow, the crossing on Yuanbei Road has created a 3D visual effect giving the crossing the appearance of roadblocks from afar, so it can easily attract the attention of drivers and pedestrians.
"It seems like a few roadblocks from a distance and I instantly slowed down when I noticed," said a driver surnamed Liu.
The new-look crosswalk is an attempt at reducing traffic accidents in the area which has seen 128 traffic accidents related to zebra crossings since 2017, accounting for 43.4 percent of the total.
Despite various punishments and traffic security promotion activities, some drivers still ignored the zebra lines in areas where no traffic police were on duty or no traffic signals were present. The local traffic police thus made the 3D zebra crossing appear like roadblocks. As a result, more drivers now slow down at the junction to give way to pedestrians.
