Far from crowded scenic spots, many apple orchards in rural areas of Shanxi province provide people with one more choice to take a break during the National Day holiday, which also help increase local farmers’ income and improve their living standards.
Due to the varying range of temperatures and ample sunshine, Shanxi is an ideal place for apples to grow.
As the major fruit crop in Shanxi province, apple trees cover a planting area of more than 3,300 square kilometers. The industry has become a driving force in promoting the economic development in rural areas.
“My cooperative consists of 532 households from four villages,” said Wu Zhuqin, a college graduate who gave up her flourishing career in Beijing and started an apple planting cooperative in her hometown.

“The sales reached 27 million yuan ($ 4 million) in 2016 and we have received orders totaling 35,000 tons this year,” she added.
As ecommerce grows fast, local farmers have made full use of online platforms to expand their market.
According to Wang Meifang, who sells apples on WeChat, a popular social messaging App, her daily sales volume can reach more than 250 kilograms, with buyers from around the country.
Local governments also contribute to developing the industry through introducing new breeds and technologies.
“Our annual income was about 40,000 yuan,” said Shi Huairong, a skilled apple planter in Xiangning county. The number has doubled after the scientific management was introduced.
Besides, more innovative business models are underway to promote the apple industry and help local farmers live a better life.
