Linfen sets out plans to become tourism hotspot

Linfen city in North China’s Shanxi province recently held a meeting regarding the area’s tourism industry and local attractions, focusing on annual objectives and plans for 2018.

Data shows that in 2017, a total of 52.51 million tourists from across the country visited Linfen, an increase of 30.5 percent compared with 2016. In addition, tourism revenues hit 48.45 billion yuan ($7.06 billion), representing year-on-year growth of 30 percent –– 80 percent of the total revenues reported by firms in the city’s tertiary sector.

According to a target agreed at the meeting, in 2018, the city plans to receive 65 million tourists from across the world, with revenues reaching more than 60 billion yuan, and tourism fast becoming one of the city’s pillar industries.

The city is banking on its “1355” project to speed up development in the tourism sector.

Each number refers to one part of the project, with “1” referencing the city’s hosting of the 2018 Shanxi Tourism Development Conference from Sept 19 to 21; “3” refers to the rivers, mountains and the city as Linfen’s three focuses; “5” refers to breakthroughs in marketing, innovation, integration, activities and communication; and the final “5” refers to five projects that will focus on areas such as protecting relics, developing museums, and building transportation infrastructure.

In addition, with the goal of “building a world-famous tourist destination”, the city will invest 48.6 billion yuan in 124 tourism projects, promote construction of A-level rated attractions and facilities at scenic spots, and design tourism projects aimed at people from the local area.
