The opening ceremony of Hou Xiangqing’s solo exhibition of wax printing is held in the art gallery of Shanxi University on June 19.

Hou Xiangqing, 68, is the one of China's few artists who specialize in wax printing and the only master in this field in Shanxi province.

His works integrate eastern art elements, such as opera mask designs, costumes, folk customs and Buddhism to create works full of passion and vigor.

Called "laran" in Chinese, wax printing is a way of decorating fabric by covering parts of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing it.
