A key meeting about Shanxi province’s current developments in science and technology was held at Shanxi University, also known as SXU, on Oct 24, university officials said.

It aimed to help SXU teachers and students get a handle on Shanxi’s measures to accelerate technological innovation and widen the opening up, cooperation and reforms in the energy sector.

Following the meeting, Wang Shengwei, professor from the China University of Geosciences, gave a lecture on large coal reservoir fracture systems, the identification of diversion channels, theory on coal-bed gas well drainage and its applications in exploration and development.

Nearly 100 teachers and students from related departments at SXU attended the lecture.

Professor Wang gave a briefing on the current situation regarding coal-bed gas developments and provided examples through charts and pictures. He then explained key problems in the development and use of coal-bed gas.

Officials said that teachers and students present were given a clear understanding of the current status and trends in the development of coal-bed gas, and they also had discussions with Professor Wang following the lecture.

Shanxi province is currently a national comprehensive reform pilot area for the province’s energy revolution. Professor Wang said the province should adhere to structural reforms on the energy supply side, to continuously improve the quality of the energy supply system.

He also suggested accelerating the large-scale development of the coal-bed gas industry, the sustainable development of new energy and the efficient and clean utilization of energy.

He advocated boosting the construction of energy projects in the province, the construction of an energy technological innovation hub, as well as the construction of an exchange and cooperation platform for the energy revolution.

The consensus of the meeting was that teachers at SXU should take responsibilities to conduct studies and research into energy, in order to contribute to Shanxi’s energy revolution.
