The Mount Tai Observatory successfully accomplished an observation program of breeding birds for the 2016 Nationwide Biodiversity Monitoring in July, tswb.cc reported.

A total of 274 wild bird species were recorded during the observation period of two months at Mount Tai and the surrounding areas, belonging to 14 orders and 40 families, accounting for 62.7 percent of wild birds in Shandong province.

Mount Tai's physical environment and climate provides woody and grassy habitats for a wide variety of animals and plants. It is home to many varieties of resident birds and migratory birds, providing ample places to breed, nest and feed.

Some 11 amateur birdwatchers selflessly contributed their time to the work of bird photography, observation and data recording for the Mount Tai Management Committee.

Liu Zhaorui, a worker from the municipal postal department, said that he was grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the observations.

Liu said that he started out as an amateur photographer, but after stumbling across a collection of avian photographs captured by Liu Bing, a veteran birdwatcher, he was amazed by the beauty of the birds, and became a regular birdwatcher at Mount Tai.
