The city of Tai'an in East China's Shandong province has made significant progress in improving the quality of life of its residents during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), local authorities reported.

The subsistence allowances for urban and rural residents increased by 44.2 percent and 92.4 percent per person per month, respectively, and a temporary assistance system has been established with an annual average of more than 20 million yuan ($3.06 million) in temporary relief funds granted.

Services for the elderly in urban and rural areas have also continued to improve, with a special fund of total of 343 million yuan being established to support the development of the elderly care service industry.

The city has established 193 daily care centers and 110 nursing institutions for the elderly, and in 2019 the city spent 160 million yuan to renovate nursing homes.

Social services have also been improved, with 447 rural community service centers having been built during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, while the city's charitable organizations and institutions raised funds worth 473 million yuan.
