A set of books about genealogies of Fujian-rooted Taiwan people made its debut at the 10th cross-Straits Book Fair, which opened on Oct 17 in Taipei, Taiwan.
The book series, published in September 2014, consists of 100 volumes, which record families of the top 100 Taiwan clans, including people surnamed Chen, Lin, Huang, Zhang and Li. Chen Zhiping, a professor from Xiamen University in Fujian province, along with his compiling team members, contributed to the book series, which is a major publishing program in China’s 12th 5-year plan (2011-2015).
About 80 percent of Taiwan residents are descendants of Fujian migrants. The books have collected family histories for those Fujian-rooted Taiwan people, and also a record of the development of Chinese civilization. They are valuable records of cross-Straits genetic and cultural connections.
In addition, many other cultural and historical documents are on display at the book fair, including a copy series of ancient books by a reengineering Chinese ancient book program. The program, which started in 2002, published five copy sets of ancient books with modern simulation printing technology. The five book collections are ancient book copies from the Tang (618-907), Song (960-1279), Jin (1115-1234), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911), as well as copies about the Chinese minority ethnic groups’ history. They cost a total of 3 million yuan ($490,000).
