A joint project by Karamay, Russian and Kazakhstan companies to improve heavy oil recovery efficiency was officially launched on Oct 15.

The tripartite cooperation project is run by Karamay Keli New Technology Company, Russia's Ufa Institute and Kazakhstan's North Buzachi oilfield company. The three companies will conduct joint technical research and application tests in the North Buzachi oilfield in Kazakhstan.

Dong Ping, an official of the Xinjiang Department of Science and Technology, said the project is of great significance for the development of oil industry since it will not only solve the resource deficiency problems in North Buzachi oilfield, but also help boost scientific and technological innovation and cultivate relevant talents.

This is the first time that a private Karamay company took part in an international cooperation project, signaling that Karamay local enterprises' research capacity is gaining international recognition, according to Zhang Hongyan, mayor of the Karamay city.
