Nanhu Middle School has become one of the first 204 national psychological health education specialized schools.

Urumqi No 36 Middle School, Urumqi No 4 Middle School, Urumqi Bayi Middle School, Jichang No 7 Middle School and the Muslim Middle School of Changji Hui autonomous prefecture also gained the honor.

Selection of national psychological health education specialized schools was launched by the Ministry of Education. Schools will be selected every two years after 2014 to identify and recommend advanced schools for psychological health education work and to promote mental health education.

Nanhu Middle School is equipped with a comprehensive psychological center with a sand table room, a venting room, a group activity room and a psychological measurement room. It was funded with 1.6 million yuan ($250,000) from the government.

Grade one students at the school have one mental health education class each week, and older students may choose special lectures on topics such as puberty education, and learning to prevent HIV.

Every student and teacher at the school recently filled in various mental health questionnaires. Psychology teachers will conduct mental health evaluation interviews according to the results.

At present, the school has a complete system of early warning mechanisms for psychological crisis, and a psychological health education program to foster a good mental health culture.
