Kunming volunteers took part in a trail walking event in the Kunming Expo Park on Jan 31, raising nearly 80,000 yuan ($12,700) for children in poor mountainous areas in this Southwest China city.

More than 3,000 people from 30 local institutions and enterprises attended the event, among whom 20 were from the Kunming Hi-Tech Zone.

Each participant needed to complete a course of five kilometers while a pedometer application on the smart phone counted the number of walker's steps and calculated the amount of money he/she contributed.

The fund raised will be used to buy beddings and warm clothes for 2,552 children in poor and remote areas of Kunming to protect them against bitter cold during the winter days.

The event, hosted by Kunming Communist Youth League, Kunming Youth Development Foundation and Kunming Volunteer Center, has been organized both to raise public awareness for needy children and to encourage people of all walks of the society to take part in physical exercise.
