The Mengwo Buddha Temple located in Pu’er city’s Jinggu county, was once a popular place for locals to worship Buddha, and its history dates back more than 300 years.
The temple is typical of a Lama pagoda, and is built with red sandstone and decorated with animals of the Chinese Zodiac and a lotus throne.
Two banyan trees, which Buddhists regard as a holy, grow out of the two ancient pagodas on each side of the temple gate. The temple features an extraordinary sight as the banyan tree on the right has grown without showing its roots, while the other one on the left wraps the tower from top to bottom, with its roots and branches visible as if the tree and tower are as one. The scene is a must-see in Yunnan and attracts tourists from far and wide.
