Pu'er has one national port - Simao port, one provincial cross-border economic cooperation zone - Menglian (Meng'e) cross-border economic cooperation zone, one national second category port - Menglian port, and one national first category port - Mengkang port, which is under construction. In Pu'er, there are 17 highways certificated by the provincial government, of which six are in Menglian county, three in Lancang county, five in Ximeng, and three in Jiangcheng. In 2012, the total import-export passengers reached 790,000, and the figure for import-export vehicle was 164,000. The total of import-export goods reached 316,000 tons, with a value of 1.85 billion yuan ($300,995,000).
The port of Simao
Simao is a national first category port which opens to outside. The port is 420 km away from Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle in Thailand, 478 km from Houayxay in Laos, 787 km from Luang Prabang in Laos, and 1260 km away from Vientiane, the capital of Laos. It is an important channel which connects Yunnan and southwest China. The construction plan was approved by the State Council in 1993 and in April 2001, it passed an assessment and opened to the public. The port covers an area of six sq km with four finished docks. The target annual goods volume is 300,000 tons, and the target passenger volume is 100,000. The harbor building boasts an area of 4,328 sq m and the assessment building covers an area of 1,852 sq m. Both of them feature excellent facilities. Two port warehouses which cover an area of 1,750 sq m have also been built. The management established bonded rooms and bought loaders/unloaders. Simao is the most important port for Lancang-Mekong River international shipping.
The port of Mengkang
The port of Mengkang is set to become the most convenient land border port for transportation from Yunnan province to Laos and Southeast Asia. The construction of the port was formally started in July 2008 and on July 24, 2011, the State Council certified Mengkang as a national port, and it is set to open to the public once it passes another assessment following its completion.
The port of Menglian
The provincial government approved the port of Menglian as a national second category port in August 1991. In 2005, the construction of a new Menglian port started and on December 11, 2007, the older Menglian port moved to the new site and started operation. From 2009 to 2012, Menglian port attracted a total investment of 64,490,000 yuan ($10,492,523). A series of port infrastructure constructions, including the extension of the goods inspection yard, a customs and certification hall and border trading site have also been completed. It now serves as an important port between Pu'er and Myanmar.
Menglian (Meng'e) cross-border economic cooperation zone
Menglian (Meng'e) cross-border economic cooperation zone is one of the five cross-border economic cooperation zones proposed in the State Council's report, Speed up the construction of Yunnan province as an important bridgehead opens to southwest China. The zone has an investment of 1.95 billion yuan ($317,070,000), and the construction started on April 11, 2012.
Port of Longfu(scheduled)
Longfu boaders Abazhai in Vietnam. In recent years, Vietnam's economy has developed rapidly following the implementation of the country's opening up policy, and it is keen to be involved in the regional economic integration. The authorities decided it was necessary to create a land border port which could increase communication and cooperation between Pu'er and Vietnam. A border trading market has been set up.
