Olive kernel carving workshop
(chinadaily.com.cn)Kernel carving is a Chinese folk handicraft in which the pits of peaches, apricots, olives, walnuts, and others are carved to create delicate designs, patterns, and pictures. Images of Buddha, natural landscapes, and Chinese zodiacs are crafted by Zhang, a master in the craft who’s running the olive kernel carving workshop on the Zhenfeng Cultural Street in Zhouzhuang. Sadly, the practice is facing extinction due to very few people taking it up. It is craftsmen such as Zhang that are keeping the valuable tradition alive, and giving visitors a genuine chance to step back in time.
