Updated: 2009-11-12 11:55 Forms of yoga Vinyasa Yoga Poses are intertwined through flowing movement accompanied by synchronized breathing, creating a fluid dance from pose to pose. Ashtanga Yoga Ashtanga means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit. This focused and flowing form of yoga is one of the most popular in the US. It mixes tailored breathing with stretching poses seamlessly choreographed in an energetic 90-minute class. After 75 poses, you'll be ready to fall into a deep corpse pose at the end, and then awaken refreshed. Iyengar Yoga Focusing on the alignment of the body, this form makes use of props such as blocks, straps and blankets for various poses. This form stretches the mind and body to hold poses for longer amounts of time than more fluid forms. Bikram Yoga If you love the heat and if exercise means "sweat" to you, then this is your type of yoga. Set in heat chambers breaking 35-37.7 C, this form of yoga is acclaimed for its ability to refresh the body by releasing toxins. Be warned, however, hydrating in advance is a must. Sivananda Yoga This lifestyle practice involves not only the exercise portion of yoga, but also meditation, positive thinking, and a vegetarian diet. Spiritual wellbeing is the core focus of this form of yoga. (Tips from Robyn Wexler)
