Daniel Garst writes: "Other yardsticks, such as a city's political and economic significance, infrastructure, iconic architecture and cultural scene, surely matter more in defining global status." Obviously this is correct, but sadly it's in the day-to-day cultural scene that Beijing fails. Take the famous Silk Market. Many expats have to cross the wide road outside the market, but even when the light is green for pedestrians they are threatened by speeding taxis and other cars. Shall I go on about the attitude of staff at the market? There are many other examples of Chinese selfishness that spoil Beijing as a global metropolis.

Sorry to tell you this but one can clearly see that you last dated someone in the 80s. You say: "One sure-fire way to go home alone is to go Dutch. Number of men who get a second date after splitting the check: 0." I'm a man and I can tell you that a girl who wants me to pay for a meal on the first date will not get a second date. I want to date a girl who wants to be with me not because I buy her stuff but because she likes me. Also what's wrong with a "hoodie"? There are men out there who prefer the more casual look over the Barbie-doll look, so my advice as a man to the girls is: be yourself (and hope the man is also being himself, which will save you and him time).

Oh yeah, if you tell her she has to pay for herself sometimes when you eat out, you are going to either be eating out alone (she dumps you) or you'll be eating out with someone else.

Helping companies relocate outside the city center and giving incentives or tax rebates for people living close to their jobs could greatly help ease Beijing's chronic traffic congestion.

These people work very hard and very long, yet they get little thanks and little recognition for the service they provide. Without these people, homes would be filthy and the quality of life poorer. Well done to domestic workers and a big thank you for all you do. Pity more people aren't as thankful.
