Casillas eclipses Maldini mark

Iker Casillas set a milestone by playing for Porto in its Champions League last-16, second-leg tie against Juventus on Tuesday as the Spaniard made his 175th appearance in European competition.

The former Real Madrid stopper started for Porto in Turin to go past the mark previously held by legendary AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini, who made 174 appearances in continental competition and won five European Cups.

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez, a four-time Champions League winner, is next on the list with 173.

Casillas, 35, who made 157 appearances for Madrid in UEFA competitions and won the Champions League three times before leaving for Porto in 2015, will have to wait until next season to add to his tally.

Porto, which dropped the opening leg 2-0 at home, lost 3-0 on aggregate after a 1-0 defeat in Italy.

A day after he said it was his "dream" to score past Casillas, Juve's Argentine forward Paulo Dybala converted from the spot in the 42nd minute after Maxi Pereira was sent off for a handball on the goal line.
