Jilted lover yells through bullhorn

A man in Taizhou turned up on the doorstep of his ex-fiancee on her wedding night and yelled at her through a megaphone. The man demanded that his former lover return the betrothal money and debts he claimed she and her family owe him. He said he gave the woman 88,000 yuan ($12,800) for their engagement four years ago and his family also lent 140,000 yuan to her father. The pair apparently lost contact after she broke off the engagement, but he recently found out where she lived. He said she would not let him in, which is why he resorted to the megaphone.

Police arrest teen over hit-and-run

A 17-year-old high school student in Sheyang county, Yancheng, has been detained on suspicion of causing the death of a pedestrian in a hit-and-run. Police said the teen was caught on surveillance footage exiting his car to check on the female victim before fleeing. The woman, in her 70s, died from her injuries in hospital.

Elderly hoarders keep their trash

A retired couple in Guangzhou have been hoarding trash in their apartment building for more than 10 years. The case came to light after their neighbors complained to local media that the smell was becoming too much to bear. The elderly couple do not throw anything away, even storing trash in the stairwell outside their apartment. The apartment manager said that every time garbage was removed from the stairs, the couple would soon replace it with more. They even sometimes sleep in the corridor outside their apartment because there is so little space inside, he said.

Student dies in dormitory stabbing

A student at the Southern Medical University in Guangzhou has been detained on suspicion of stabbing a classmate to death and injuring another. The attack took place at 9:20 pm on March 22 in a dormitory adjacent to that of the suspect, surnamed Liu. Police have yet to establish a motive for the attack.

Police nab suspected thief

A man was detained on Thursday on suspicion of driving into the city from Hubei province to steal cellphones. Police said surveillance footage showed the suspect exiting his Audi A6 and taking a cellphone from a person in a crowd. It was the third time the man had been caught stealing, officers said. The suspect said he drove to Chongqing to avoid getting caught again.

Poisoned pond kills Koi carp

A property manager in Quanzhou, who is accused of killing 375 Koi carp by poisoning a fish pond in a residential area, has been detained. The 41-year-old told officers he emptied five bags of disinfectant tablets into the pond to get revenge on his boss for not paying him enough. He has been charged with causing an estimated 10,000 yuan ($1,400) worth of property damage.

Suspect stays in store overnight

A man has been detained in Xinyu for allegedly hiding inside a department store until it closed so that he could steal 70,000 yuan ($10,200) worth of jewelry and luxury goods. Police said surveillance footage showed the suspect entering an area of the store that was undergoing renovations with two quilts he had taken from the bedding section. He is also accused of taking a number of items under the cover of darkness before exiting the store once it had opened the following day. Many of the items were later recovered from the suspect's hotel room, officers said.

Impotent thief steals tonic wine

A 51-year-old migrant worker from Anhui province was put in a detention house in Taizhou for five days on March 17 after he stole tonic wine from a supermarket because he thought it would cure his impotence. The thief, surnamed Cheng, told officers that he stole the wine because he did not have enough money to buy both it and some flowers for his mistress, surnamed Guo. He was also fined 500 yuan ($73).

Fishing boat injures elderly swimmer

A 63-year-old woman was hospitalized after being hit by a fishing boat while swimming in Hangzhou's Qiantang River on March 23. Mei Ling, whose condition is now described as stable, had to be treated for extensive wounds to her legs and hands that doctors suspect were caused by a propeller. The local fisheries department said it was investigating the incident.

Melon mountain buries car

Police in Qujing had to dig three people out of a huge pile of watermelons on March 22 after a truck overturned and buried their car in 30 metric tons of the fruit. Officers said the car had caused the truck to swerve by illegally changing lanes. The car's driver and his two passengers were sent to hospital, where their condition has been described as stable.
