Men prosecuted for extortion

Two men in Suzhou have been prosecuted for impersonating police officers and extorting 5,500 yuan ($800) from people who hired prostitutes. One of the men, Mao Quanye, had been convicted of extortion twice before. In his most recent scheme, he visited massage parlors and hair salons to identify people who may have hired prostitutes, which is illegal in China, asking his associate to conduct surveillance of the venues. Mao then pretended to be a police officer and "fined" the people as they exited the venues. The two men confessed, saying it was hard to find employment so they resorted to extortion.
