A wedding ceremony in Zhengzhou involving 50 shared bicycles drew wide public attention. The couple getting married, who are university classmates, agreed to have an economical wedding celebration. They thought about using cars, but after learning that it would cost around 5,000 yuan ($725), they dropped the idea and chose to use shared bikes, which would cost no more than 50 yuan.

Woman's hair more than 3 meters long

A 62-year-old woman in Weihai has to stand on a table when she combs her hair, which is more than 3 meters long. Villager blames lack of love on pig farm

A male villager in Rugao, surnamed Li, said he has failed for years to win the hearts of women because of his neighbor's pig farm. Li said poor sanitation and the stench from his neighbor's pig farm are to blame. His neighbor raises between 70 and 80 pigs on the farm. Li has asked local authorities for help.

Man forges bank deposit receipt

A husband, surnamed Wang, in Shishi who forged a bank receipt to convince his wife he had 500,000 yuan ($72,000) in savings has been placed in detention for six months and fined 20,000 yuan. Wang, 47, from Hubei province, said he had forged the receipt in June 2010, as his wife, surnamed Du, complained he did not earn enough money. Police were alerted when Du attempted to withdraw money from the account last year, as the receipt stated that the savings account matured after six years. Wang was detained in Yunnan province in November.

Tea shop praised for helping worker

A milk tea shop in Chengdu has attracted wide public attention after selling a large cold drink to a sanitation worker for only 4 yuan (60 US cents) on April 28. When the male worker asked to buy the cheapest cold drink on offer, the boss asked her staff to give the worker a large cold drink for 4 yuan, telling the worker he would be given a 50 percent membership discount. The shop was praised, as members cannot purchase a drink this cheap, but the boss wanted to help someone in need.

Wife helps rescue kidnapped husband

A man, surnamed Li, who had been kidnapped, was rescued recently in Jiande after using code language to encourage his wife to seek police help. When Li was forced to call his wife, surnamed Wang, on April 17 to organize a ransom, Li was able to convey to Wang that he had been kidnapped. After speaking to Li, Wang sought police help. A police operation saw Li rescued and six suspects detained.

Teenage gang held over stealing

Police recently detained a teenage gang in Baoji, with the oldest of the six suspected gang members age 15, and youngest age 13. The gang is suspected of stealing more than 80,000 yuan ($11,500) worth of property in more than 50 cases in Hubei and Shaanxi provinces in recent months. The suspected gang leader, surnamed Liu, who comes from Hubei's Shiyan, is 14 years old. The gang, which is suspected of stealing property after breaking into local stores and residential houses, includes five primary school dropouts.

Boy fractures skull in freak accident

A 3-year-old boy was seriously hurt after falling from his father's shoulders when he came into contact with a metal wire in Xi'an on May 1. The boy was sent to hospital, where it was discovered he had a skull fracture. His father said fatigue may have played a part in the accident, while doctors said they hope the boy will eventually make a full recovery.
