Tibetan triumphs on Yuzhu Peak

Jannya Ringyal of China and Stevie Kremer of the US won the XTrail FKT (Fastest Known Time) men's and women's races respectively on Yuzhu Peak in Qinghai province on Saturday.

The race, which tops out at 6,625m above sea level, is the highest trail run in the world. To provide some perspective, that's more than 300m higher than Tanzania's famous Mt Kilimanjaro.

Jannya Ringyal, from Tibet, clocked a winning time of 1:02.20, while Kremer defended her title in 1:22.50.

Jason Schlarb of the US and Ludovic Michel Pommeret of France were second and third in the men's race while on the women's side China's Xiang Fuzhao of China finished second, edging Sweden's Andrea Huser by two seconds.

Global field for Qinghai event

Last week's International ski mountaineering challenge at the 5,420m Mt Gangshika, Qinghai province, attracted about 80 entrants from China, Italy, Iran, France, Switzerland and Malaysia.

The first day of competition featured a 1,500m run from 4,200m above sea level within an hour. The second day was a 500m run from 4,400m, within 10 minutes.

Switzerland's Marti Werner, Daniele Cappelletti from Italy and Iwan Arnold, also from Switzerland, finished 1-2-3 in the men's competition on the first day, while Italy's Balzarini Bianca, Rezaei Taraneh of Iran and China's Yang Xiufeng were the women's top three.

On the second day, Arnold, Werner and Cappelletti were first, second and third while Bianca, Taraneh and China's Li Fang were the top women.

Tai Chi

Masters meet to promote fitness

More than 200 Wu style tai chi masters gathered at the Beidaihe summer resort last week for a national summit celebrating China's traditional shadow boxing sport.

The event featured seminars, demonstrations and an exhibition of tai chi culture, with an aim to promote the health-preserving exercise.

A media conference was also held to announce a series of tai chi activities for the Sanya-Nanshan World Tai Chi Cultural Festival set for Sanya, Hainan province, in September.

Aubameyang brace lifts Dortmund

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in Borussia Dortmund's 4-3 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday to finish as the Bundesliga's top scorer and seal his side's berth in the Champions League.

Aubameyang finished with 31 goals, one more than Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, who failed to score in a 4-1 home win over Freiburg.

Dodgers mum on Lasorda's condition

The Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday announced that former manager Tom Lasorda has been hospitalized.

The 89-year-old Hall of Famer has spent almost seven decades in the Dodgers' organization, starting as a minor league pitcher in the Brooklyn system in 1949. The club said Lasorda was "resting comfortably" but did not provide any additional details regarding his condition.
