Storm kills 11 people in Moscow

Sudden gales and heavy rain on Monday afternoon left at least 11 people dead and about 70 others injured in Moscow. The storm caused so much damage because it rarely happened in the daytime. The gales, with a speed of more than 80 kilometers per hour, knocked down several hundred trees and destroyed buildings in the Russian capital.

Lawmakers want martial law debate

Lawmakers in the Philippines are calling for a public session of Congress to determine whether martial law is still necessary now that the military is taking control of a southern city from Islamic militants. Last week, President Rodrigo Duterte imposed 60 days of martial law in Marawi after the city came under siege by militants linked to the Islamic State group. On Tuesday, the military said it had control of most of Marawi and the militants were on the run.

Egypt

Airstrikes pressed ahead after attack

Egypt made it clear on Monday that it planned to press ahead with airstrikes against Islamist militants in neighboring Libya, who it says were responsible for killing Egyptian Christians in an ambush last week. Libyan military commanders said Egyptian jets hit the Libyan city of Derna on Monday, continuing attacks that began hours after masked men boarded vehicles driving dozens of people to a monastery in the southern Egyptian province of Minya on Friday and killed 29.

48,000 displaced due to flooding

Seven people have died and 48,000 are displaced after heavy flood hit northern Brazil. Fifteen towns declared states of calamity on Sunday. It has been raining in Pernambuco and Alagoas states for several days.

Brazilian President Michel Temer visited areas affected by the flood on Sunday.

United Kingdom

Tiger kills female zookeeper at zoo

Police said a tiger killed a female zookeeper on Monday at Hamerton Zoo Park, 130 kilometers north of London. "A tiger had entered an enclosure with a keeper. Sadly the female zookeeper died at the scene," Cambridgeshire Police said in a statement. The zoo said in a statement that a "freak accident" was to blame for the death. It said, "Our thoughts and sympathies are with our colleagues, friends and families at this dreadful time."

Little Mermaid vandalized

Danish police are looking into a vandalism case against the country's iconic sculpture of Little Mermaid, which was doused with paint overnight, local media reported on Tuesday. The sculpture was sprayed with red paint by animal welfare activists apparently outraged over whale hunting in the country's autonomous Faeroe Islands. The culprits also left messages with red paint on the sidewalk in front of the statue, "Denmark, defend the whales of the Faeroe Islands".
