China to regulate AI-enabled digital content

The State Internet Information Office, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the State Administration of Radio and Television have jointly issued the regulations for the management of internet audio and video information services, which will be implemented on Jan 1. They state that netizens must notify viewers when publishing AI-enabled fake audio and video. Netizens are not allowed to use AI technology to spread fake news. Since the appearance of deepfake or face-swapping technology in 2017, a variety of fake videos using AI technology have emerged. With the advancement of technology, fake videos have become easier to produce and more difficult to distinguish.
