Some enterprises hoping to cash in on the upcoming Beijing Olympics were conned out of cash by a fake Olympic committee, reported the Beijing Times on Tuesday.

Xu Jun and three others have been accused of racketeering, falsely claiming to be the Beijing Olympic committee.

Last March, Xu founded a fake Olympic organization called the Promoting Beijing Olympics Committee and targeted medium and small-scale enterprises in Beijing.

The Promoting Beijing Olympics Committee charged enterprises a 20,000 Yuan fee for offering services that never materialized, such as holding Olympic forums, or listing enterprise names in Olympic-related handbooks.

A representative of a food company that fell victim to Xu's scheme, told the Beijing Times the Committee faxed and phoned them many times.

"We thought their identification was genuine because it carried the Olympic logo," he said. So the company handed over the money, hoping to gain a name for itself during the Olympics.

By August 24 this year when Xu was finally arrested, he had conned four enterprises out of a total of 80,000 Yuan.
