The volunteer service in Beijing has undergone an exploratory and innovative path since the launch of volunteer recruitment for the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2006.
The past months have seen growing interest in voluntary services with passion and enthusiasm featuring people from all walks of life. Under the circumstances, a campaign to select "Beijing Top Ten Volunteers (2006)" was launched recently.
The campaign was sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, Beijing Volunteer Association, the Office of BOCOG Volunteer Work Coordination Group, BOCOG Human Resources Department and BOCOG Volunteers Department. Beijing residents at age 15 or above, residents outside Beijing and foreigners who have worked, studied or lived for more than one year in Beijing can take part in the campaign.
The organizing committee will recommend a short-list of 30 volunteers to the evaluation committee and make it public through the media for Internet users to vote on line. The organizing committee will finalize the Top Ten Volunteers on the basis of voting by the Internet community and evaluation committee. The results will be unveiled in March.
With the strong support of people from all walks of life, the 2004 and 2005 editions of Beijing Top Ten Volunteers' selection campaign were held successfully.
Through the 2006 edition, the organizers aim to explore the connotations of volunteer service, carry out the voluntary spirit, bring together volunteer forces, create a strong social environment featuring mass participation in the Olympic Games and showcase Beijing's new image.
