The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and Beijing education authorities urged the 15 universities where the Olympic competition and training venues are located to pay more attention to venue construction and operation as well as volunteer work.
Six universities, namely Peking University, Beijing University of Science and Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, China Agriculture University, Beijing University of Technology and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics are designated to build gymnasiums for table tennis, Judo, volleyball, wrestling, badminton and weightlifting competitions respectively during the Olympic Games in 2008. More universities provide training facilities.
At a meeting with leading officials of the universities on Tuesday, Zhu Shanlu, member of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal CPC (Communist Party of China) Committee in charge of the capital city's education affairs, called on the universities to set up relevant organizational systems and working mechanisms, make clear their tasks and goals and extend necessary human resources and logistics support to ensure a good preparatory work for the Olympics.
Beijing's vice-mayor and BOCOG executive vice-president Liu Jingmin expressed hopes that the universities will conscientiously carry out the instructions of President Hu Jintao during his visit to the site of major Olympic venues on October 1 last year in an effort to achieve new progress in venue construction, volunteer recruitment and training as well as in the campaign to lift students' civility level.
