China's top football division, the Chinese Super League (CSL), is only ranked 17th in Asia and 57th in the world, declares a strength rating of global football leagues.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) unveiled the results of the world's strongest leagues rating 2007 on Thursday. The CSL dived to the continent’s 17th spot, even lagging behind leagues in Singapore and Hong Kong, dropping from last year's 3rd place.

Website Sohu.com reports the slump is mainly a result of the poor performance of various Chinese clubs in regional events.

The Primera Division of Spain beat the Premier League of England and the Brazilian league to top the table, despite a fruitless season of its powerhouses, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, in European battles.

Italian Serie A fell by four positions to the 6th spot, due largely to the "phone scandal" incident of last summer that led to the relegation of Juventus and points-cut of AC Milan.

The J-League of Japan was placed 28th to become the highest ranked Asian league.

Initiated in 1991, the ratings system is conducted annually based on indexes, in terms of TV ratings, a teams performance at international events and so on.
