At the 1928 St. Moritz Games, Ballangrud won the 5,000m by 8.6 seconds and added a bronze medal in the 1,500m. The 1932 races in Lake Placid were held pack-style, a format with which Ballangrud was unfamiliar. Although he entered three events, his only medal was a silver in the 10,000m. The normal rules were reinstated in 1936. Ballangrud won three gold medals, in the 500, the 5,000 and the 10,000, and took home a silver medal at 1,500m.
