Winner of the Narrowest Cross-Country Victory
At the 1980 Winter Olympics, Thomas Wassberg, competing in the 15km event, have to beat Juha Mieto's time of 41:57.64. Wassberg strained to the finish line and crossed in 41 minutes 57.63 seconds - one one-hundredth of a second faster than Mieto. In Sarajevo in 1984, Wassberg skied the leadoff leg for Sweden's 4x10km relay team and helped the Swedes win the race. Three days later, he earned his third career gold when he won the 50km. He won a fourth gold medal in 1988 in Calgary in the 4x10km relay.
