A 25-year-old marketing student from St. Robert, Quebec, GaƩtan Boucher had already won a silver medal at 1,000m in 1980 when he entered three events at the 1984 Sarajevo Games.

He earned a bronze medal in the 500m and then beat Sergei Khlebnikov by 83 hundredths of a second at 1,000m to gain his first gold medal.

Two days later, Boucher won a second gold medal in the 1,500m, this time bettering Khlebnikov's time by only 47 hundredths of a second.
