Eight Speed Skating Medals

Competing in her second Olympics, Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann was one of the favorites of the Albertville Games. The world record holder at 3,000m, Niemann won that event by almost three seconds. She missed a second gold in the 1,500m by only five hundredths of a second, but then she won the 5,000m by more than six seconds. In Lillehammer in 1994, Niemann had a modest Olympics, falling in the 3,000m and settling for a silver in the 5,000m and a bronze in the 1,500m. However, at the 1998 Nagano Games, she came back to win the 3,000 and earn silvers in the 1,500m and 5,000m, to bring her career medal total to eight.
