At the 1988 Calgary Games, Valery Medvedtsev earned silver medals in the 20km and 10km biathlon races, finishing behind Frank-Peter Roetsch both times. In the 4x7.5km relay, Medvedtsev anchored the Soviet team, giving the USSR it's sixth straight victory in the event. Medvedtsev returned to the Olympics in 1992 and, as the leadoff skier in the relay, earned a third silver medal. He participated again in the Lillehammer Games in 1994, finishing 24th in the 20km event.
