The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics will "bring warmth to the spectators' hearts," promises Zhang Yimou, chief director of the opening and closing ceremonies of next year's Games.

He said this during an interview with Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV last Friday.

"The opening ceremony will showcase Chinese culture. What is more important is that it will carry tender emotions as well," explained Zhang, who is best known for his films like Raise the Red Lantern, Hero and House of Flying Daggers.

Zhang added the ceremony will not only showcase Chinese culture, but the people too.

During the interview, Zhang disclosed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the plan for the 3.5-hour long opening ceremony.

"The IOC is very satisfied with the plan. And the different elements of the event may change slightly during rehearsals, once the IOC approves them."

The chief director began planning the opening and closing ceremonies since last March.

In mid August this year, Zhang was quoted by the official website of the Beijing Organizing Committee (BOCOG) as saying, "The appearance of the National Stadium, or the 'Bird's Nest,' will play an important part in the whole aerial scenery shot from helicopters."

He is also collecting pictures featuring smiling children's faces from around the world for possible use in the artistic performances of the ceremonies, according to Xinhua news agency in earlier September.

Reports say the budget for the opening and closing ceremonies is expected to cost US$100 million.
