YANGON -- Olympic Day Run 2008 Billiards competition will be held here this week to promote the billiards sport in the country, according to the Myanmar Billiards and Snooker Federation (MBSF) on Monday.
Only men's single billiards event will be included in the Olympic Day Run 2008 billiard tournament scheduled on June 21-22 at the Aung San Indoor Stadium, the MBSF said.
Any local billiards player can compete in the tournament and talented young players from it will be chosen as selected billiards players for the country, it added.
Myanmar hosted for the second time the 7th Asian Billiards and 9th U-21 Asian Snooker Championships at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel here in April, with the participation of 55 players -- 25 billiards players and 30 snooker players, including defending and four other former world billiards champions, from 14 countries.
Indian Pankaj Advani crowned in the all-Indian final of the 7th Asian Billiards Championships and Li Hang of China became champion by defeating his compatriot Li Yuan 6-1 in the 3-hour- long final of the 9th U-21 Asian Snooker Championship.
Kyaw Oo and Aung San Oo of Myanmar grabbed gold medal in the men's double billiards event and Nay Thway Oo got bronze medal in the men's single event of the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand in December 2007.
The Myanmar Billiards and Snooker Federation, which was founded in April 1996, has got 16 medals -- three gold, seven silver and six bronze -- from the international competitions from 1997 to 2007, grabbing one bronze from World Championship, one gold, one silver and three bronzes from Asian Billiards Championships, two silvers and one bronze from Asian Games and two golds, four silvers and one bronze from SEA Games.
