State officials reiterated the importance of ensuring a safe Beijing Olympic Games yesterday at a mobilization meeting of those involved in the event.

"Safety is the most important indicator of the Games' success and is also important for our country to showcase its image," Vice-President Xi Jinping said, adding the 30 days before the opening of the Games is a crucial time.

China has established a security command system and adopted a series of security measures. Last month, emergency response departments participated in a terrorism drill in Beijing's Chaoyang Park.

Security officials in six co-host cities have also conducted repeated inspections of key facilities to identify potential threats, and have drafted and tested emergency responses.

"We should also encourage citizens to join the security work and enhance cooperation with international organizations to form a strong coalition of forces to ensure a safe Olympics," Xi said.

The mobilization meeting gathered thousands of people involved in all aspects of the Games, including members of the organizing committee, venue operation teams, relevant government departments, host city representatives, volunteers and service industry workers.

Xi called on everyone involved to ensure high-quality services during the Games and use the month before to smooth any speed bumps.

"When the Games open, the services check sheet should satisfy everyone."

Attending venue managers said preparations were on track.

"Our preparation has entered the final rehearsal stage, and we will take full responsibility for our contribution to the Games," Shang Heshun, venue director of the National Aquatics Center, said.

China will send its largest sports delegation to the Games, with 613 athletes having qualified to date.
