Beijing - Michael Phelps of US won the men's 100m butterfly gold by clocking 50.58 with a new Olympic record in the National Aquatics Center at the Beijing Games August 16, 2008.
Milorad Cavic of Serbia took the silver with a time of 50.59 while Australia's Andrew Lauterstein finished third in 51.12 to get the bronze.

Phelps's seventh gold medal made him match Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics.
Spitz, also an American swimmer, won his seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics but Phelps will get the chance to better that haul in Sunday's medley relay.
