BEIJING -- Peruvian President Alan Garcia has voiced support for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and spoke highly of China's development modes.

Hosting the Olympics is a great opportunity for China to showcase its tremendous achievements since the country's reform and opening up, Garcia said in a signed article published by El Comercio, a leading Peruvian newspaper, on March 27.

The president condemned some international forces for trying to use the Tibet and Taiwan issues to disrupt the Beijing Olympics and defame China's image.

"All these attempts were aimed to halt China's advance and prevent the country from becoming the focus of the world when the Olympics is held," he said.

Garcia reiterated that his government would unswervingly support the Chinese government on these issues.

He added that he believed China would continue its growth due to the competitiveness of its products and the annual increase of millions of new consumers.

The Beijing Olympics is of high strategic significance and China will maintain its momentum for sustained development, he said.
