Comment on "No money, no marriage?" (chinadaily.com.cn, July 6)
It is wrong to say that marriage is founded on the basis of having money. In today's world there are girls who tend to be money-wise when being sought after for marriage, but it is never a perfect world, so things more often than not do not turn out as expected.
The Chinese have their own experiences. All parents want the best for their kids. They care for them from birth, and the parents are most concerned that their kids find suitable and responsible spouses so that they will be well cared for. But the future is unpredictable and uncertain. What is good is what is seen now. So the parents look for what the prospects have in hand at present.
Is it realistic-no money, no marriage? I say it is not, and maybe it is unwise. I say a girl should look for discipline, responsibility and good character first. Possession of material wealth is a bonus. The reason is simple. Uncertainty of the future. Today one may be rich, but tomorrow one can become poor. Also one can be poor now, but can one not be rich tomorrow?
My dear Chinese sisters, look for the person's virtues and not his possessions. It is a known fact that a rich boy will normally look for beautiful girls, and money changes people. Look at our foreign sports personalities like famous golfer Tiger Woods and some English league footballers. They made and have millions of dollars or pounds but are their marriages happy? Money made the men, and money also could break them.
So you may think you are safe with husbands who have money. Think twice. You are better off with husbands who are responsible and disciplined. Be happy if they can give you a Cherry car and other average amenities. Don't ask for a Ferrari. Be frightened if your men have such cars.
