Comment on "Make law work for foreign workers" (China Daily, July 21)

To support their case for more immigration, the authors say there is a "shortage of workers" in South China. But that is inaccurate. South China still has plenty of workers and many employers are willing to lure them with better wages, and working conditions and benefits. Employers are not facing a labor shortage rather they have learned to value their employees more.

At this early stage of China's development, lowly paid illegal or legal immigrants should not be allowed from neighboring countries because their competitive presence will depress local wages, widen income inequality and disturb social harmony.
