Comment on "Bridging urban-rural divide" (China Daily, Sept 21)
I agree wholeheartedly with what Michele Geraci has said. It is time the government thought about striking a balance between urban and rural residents in China.
I have been living in Shanghai, one of China's most modern cities, for three years. I feel that everyone living in the city is threatened by the large population.
The migration from rural to urban areas may cause not only "overcrowding of cities" as Geraci says, but also create safety problems. Moreover, many rural people can just get low-paying jobs in big cities, leaving their children to fall into the same trap.
There seems to be little chance of improving their life. Therefore, we should consider the future seriously. Narrowing the gap between the urban and rural people's income is the most crucial task for China.
