Comment on "Street vendors vibrant part of city life" (China Daily, Aug 2)
Not paying enough attention to environmental sanitation is a problem of not only vendors, but also many citizens in China. It is unfair to blame vendors alone for it, and encroach upon the living space they deserve.
Chengguan (urban law enforcement officers) should, no doubt, enforce regulations strictly to demonstrate the power of law. But the problem is that chengguan and other law enforcers almost always abuse this power, a problem that is worse than the so-called sanitation mess created by vendors.
China is capable of doing big things such as the hosting of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Hence, there's no reason for it not to resolve the vendors' issue amicably.
